Rogers modem ~ suggestions?

Postby ringrust on Tue Apr 28, 2009 11:28 pm

I still have the modem left over from where I had Rogers Mobile Internet a coupla years ago ~ when I could afford to pay for it! ~ & I was wondering. . . is there any way that I can use that to "hijack" some internet signals from my neighbourhood or here @ MUN? Or is there some sorta lock inside of it, requiring that it only be accessible on the Rogers network?

Any geeky help would be appreciated, as I have the modem {too lazy to return it?} & an abundance of time @ home which I can easily fill with such necessities as Facebook & WWE Universe! I mean porn! I mean. . . ahh dammit!

With rogers it's difficult, possible sure, any code can be broken. Without knowing how it works though I wouldn't know where to start, and it would definitely be illegal :P

With MUN it's pretty easy, find a mun student friend without a laptop and register your MAC using their student number. I'm not sure if MUN still has the dial up program they did a few years ago, but that's also an option for at home.
...when all else fails, duck. It's not practical, but it can be momentarily comforting.

"possible"

On a long enough time-line, yes. About the age of the universe^2 would do it.

Time isn't necessarily an issue, I was just curious if there's any real reason why I should even still have it, or should I just throw it away? More than likely, even Traders won't take it & unless I wanna walk out to the Rogers store on Topsail Road & return it there {which I suppose would be the least-sly solution!} then it's otherwise a rather nicely-styled paperweight. :geek:

Illegal? Yes, but here's the rub: of all the companies that provide cable, apparently Rogers is the only 1 that brands its pirated service illegal, @ least here in Canada. Weird, I know, I recall being told this while working @ ICT {the call centre on Torbay Road that locally provides -- wait for it! -- Rogers Cable, Wireless & Internet customer service!!} :o

I'm not concerned with the legality of the modem's use -- if they can track the usage, then they can arrest me all they want. . . @ least I won't have to worry about having my Social Assistance cheque spent before the next 1 gets issued!

Anywho, if anybody wants to have a look @ it, you're welcome to. If it's possible to be done in 1 or 2 sittings {regardless of how long each sitting ends up being} I can bring it & my laptop {for which it'll be used} over to your place & we can brainstorm it together. Well, you can brainstorm it & I can drink all your diet soda & eat all your chips. Yeah, that sounds like a fair transaction! . . .

Ok, so I am not too sure on this one, but I think that modems are not registered with some central database at rogers. Meaning, if you know someone with rogers internet, and you wire from their place to yours a cable wire, you should be able to use their internet. But that is just theory, I havn't tested it before.

I know, also from my time working with ICT, that you can plug your cable wire into a modem & connect to the 'net {hence, "cable internet"}. But my laptop doesn't have the proper connector. Is something like that pricey for a laptop?

you're looking for an ethernet adaptor for your laptop?

Yeah, you can get things like that, that plug in through the usb to plug in to an ethernet port.

Well, primarily, I want to use my otherwise-useless-to-me Rogers modem. Since I already have it, I don't need to spend extra cash to buy a new 1.
