Society History

The second year of Winter-Een-Mas three geeks, Jennifer, Leslie and Rebecca, decided to hold a big gathering in celebration of the holiday. Despite the horrible weather it was a huge success, and lead many to question why events like these weren't held more often. As the idea was bounced around it quickly became larger and larger in attempts to encompass everyone's particular interests.

It was shortly after that, in February of 2006, that MUN Geek Society was founded. We ran primarily as a MUN organization, as the majority of our members were MUN students. However, as months turned to years and word of MGS spread, we found ourselves with very few MUN students.

By the summer of 2008, we found ourselves in the position of being a "MUN" Geek Society with no MUN students. We had long out grown our MUN roots, with members ranging from Junior High students to University Professors! A name change was in order. The idea of becoming the Newfoundland Geek Society was bounced around, but in the end it was decided to go with "The Geek Society" to avoid being boxed in again.

Website History

Geeks are notorious for being web savvy, so our sites play a role in our history.

With it's image background and awesome mouse-overs, you'd swear that it was straight out of the 90s. Nope, it was just the first attempt at having a website. Our original site was hosted by MUN, but was deadly slow and a pain to update. It wasn't very long until the domain www.mungeeksoc.com was purchased and the site moved there.

As luck would have it we has a member join with some experience in webdesign. He quickly brought us out of the dark ages. Still on the same domain, but with a whole new twist. This new design was built as a portal, with the forum containing most of the information.

When we switched names, we also switched domains. We also decided that with the new name we should also update our look. It was agreed to go back to the original page style for ease of finding information, but the forums still are the main focus of activity.
